A little bit of History
The roots of our villa’s storied past can be traced back to the 16th century when it was under the ownership of Lucia Casalini, a renowned Bolognese painter. She and her husband, Felice Torelli, a Veronese painter, jointly established a workshop in Bologna, where Lucia flourished as one of the city’s most talented female artists. Later on, it is believed that the villa found itself in the hands of the Carbonari, a secret society based in nearby Fratta Polesine, who used it for their clandestine gatherings.
Certain intriguing details within the villa, such as a faux corner concealing a service staircase rumored to lead to a secret tunnel, and a discreet hole in the main staircase for spying on adversaries, lend special character to this intriguing chapter in its history.
Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, the villa served as a summer residence for various families, until a family from Rovigo acquired it and christened it Villa Maria Teresa. Today, this cultural treasure proudly holds recognition from the esteemed Ministry of the Arts.
In recent years, we’ve taken on the responsibility of preserving and revitalizing this historic gem, infusing it with modern comforts while safeguarding its genuine charm. Over the centuries, Villa Maria Teresa has witnessed countless love stories and joyous memories. Our aim at Italian Wedding in Villa is to add your special day and unique union to Villa Maria Teresa’s rich tapestry of romance.
The Architectural Legacy
The main building, known as the “Casa Padronale,” echoes Palladio’s rustic villa architectural style, enriched by well-preserved decorative stone elements. The ground floor boasts unique stonework, reminiscent of the Palazzo Roncale in Rovigo.
The upper floor features a round arched window flanked by a double order of engaged columns, with a cornice running along the attic, harkening back to the late Renaissance style. Less conspicuous but equally significant is the treatment of plaster on the corner sections, in harmony with the ground floor entrance.
Even today, the villa’s original composition remains intact, including the adjoining “barchessa,” a distinctive architectural element common in Veneto’s villas. This barchessa, a large portico extending from the main building, serves as a covered outdoor space for various activities, from gatherings to social events, all while offering a splendid view of the surrounding landscape. With its elegant arches, decorative nuances, and seamless integration into the villa’s overall design, the barchessa stands as a testament to the architectural richness and cultural heritage of the Veneto region.
The fusion of historical significance, architectural beauty, and intriguing stories makes Villa Maria Teresa an utterly captivating place.
